anything special I don't know about removing the crankshaft pulley from an 88 2.9? my puller dont seem to be doing it??

I haven't worked on a 2.9 in so long I don't remember but if it's the same as a 4.0 your puller is probably pushing on a washer in the center of the pulley instead of the crankshaft. On the 4.0 you need to use a long, skinny bolt through the hole in the washer so your puller screw will acually be pushing against the crankshaft. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!!!!

IIRC you should have one that threads into the balancer bolt hole then threee or four that thread into the balancer. Either that or there is the centering piece for the center and the bolts to pull the balancer off in the other holes.

It's been awhile for me too, trying to visualize . . . .

I'm not a great mechanic but it sounds like you need a harmonic balancer remover. It has three bolts you screw into the inside of it. You use a long bolt that pulls it off the shaft. It's real easy, the puller will pull it off like butter. [first remove the bolt in the center, thats what holds it on]

Not familiar at all with them motors either. thought on the V-8's you remove the center bolt, remove the washer, and put the center bolt back in so the puller has something to push on. Been awhile here also.

I believe you 1st have to remove the harmonic balancer with a harmonic balancer puller.
Should have 4 long bolts that screw into the balancer and one centered push rod to push / pull the balancer off against the crank and four bolts in the balancer.
Then you'll need a 3 jaw pulley remover to get the crank pulley off. It'll have 3 jaws and the same center push bolt.

thanks for the replys, we finally got it off, we were just using the wrong insert in the puller.. as you guy stated.. switched it out, & it came right off..
first time tearing into a 2.9
thanks for the help..
