Okay my ranger has been pissing me off latey. after a snow storm I moved my truck to shovel out the driveway etc and had it sitting for about 5-7mins just idling. then it just shut off and wouldn't turn back on. Now I have a exhaust leak but that wouldn't keep it from starting.

I've checked for spark and I have spark. from the plugs, coil and dizzy
fuel is a go as well. I can also hear both fuel pumps turn on, and have fuel pressure (tested it with a fuel pressure gauge.
I'm thinking about busting out my noid lights to see if my fuel injectors are pulsing but still it should start with starter fluid at the very least.
I also check my ign control module and it passed the test three times
cap and rotor look good.
grounds are tight from the battery from the body and chassis
I used my power probe to check for power and ground from the starter silenode/relay and had 12v'.
my EEC "should" be good since when I turn the key forward the check engine light comes on for two seconds along with the fuel pumps turning on.
oh also checked fuses

So what's left on my list is to check the ECT sensor
and the o2 sensor
besides that I'm at a lost. and I know it's going to turn out to be something so simple.

SO please any help would be awesome!!!! please I also looked over the electrical start/ign system in my chilton and my hynes manual and couldn't find anything that I haven't checked yet.

If it's sparking it should do something when you spray it with starting fluid... It's not even attempting to start? Not even a flutter?

Does it sound like it's cranking normally?

You say the pumps come on, have you tested the fuel pressure?

Clean your IAC. Look in the chilton's/Hanes manual for a picture. Will be called intake(idle?) air controller.

yes I know what the IAC is but that wouldn't stop it from starting even if it has carb build up on it.
And I did spary starter fluid in it but a no go, so I'm guessing maybe a clog somewhere in the fuel rail.

remembered that last summer I cleaned out my IAC and put a new gasket on there, but just for haha's I went ahead and used some carb cleaner on it today and still no change :(

Argh yea could be the chain, if it is then I'm just going to upgrade to a 4.0L or a turbo diesel baby!!! :D

Just take the cap off the dizzy and turn the motor over. If the rotor is turning the chain is still intact.
If its firing but wont start I would still suspect timing though. Possibly jumped a tooth or two if the chain is stil intact.

Put a timing light on #1 plug wire and check the timing while cranking on it you can rotate the crank both ways a little to see how much slop is in the timing chain by watching the rotor. Are the plugs wet after you crank on it a bit and is it fuel try lighting it with a lighter. A compression test wouldnt hurt either and you can use a long screwdriver set it on the injectors and put your ear up to the handle to listen for the pulses. Have you fully charged the battery low voltage will keep it from starting especially cold. Let us know what you figure out either way I`m gonna guess water in the fuel or it skipped time.

I had a similar problem

I have a 1990 ranger it had a problem of not starting sometimes but when it did it ran great. Checked out everything I could think of like fire to the plugs, fuel preasure, was thinking maybe a fuel pump. But I got a wild hair to pull the spark plugs and check to see what they looked like even though they were getting fire. When I pulled them they gap on them was huge. I replaced them with new plugs properly gaped plugs finished the tune up. And the truck has been running great since.

what ar ethe chances something plugged in ur exhaust.i saw a car once where the muffler baffle had rotted loose and would periodicaly flap against the outlet causeing a blockage and no start condition.

I have stacks on my truck for the exhaust.
but I'm going to do a compression test today and take off the cap and have someone turn the key while I watch the rotor.

I did check yesterday to see if it was on TDC on the crank pulley and it was along with my rotor pointing to plug one. I'm going to pull the plugs and see whats going on. I did buy some plugs yesterday while I was at autozone because I use copper plugs so they do not last as long and it's been awhile since I've changed them.

I do hope that the chain didn't skip a tooth just because time is really not working with me, and I have school on Monday can't miss my lab class. only allowed two drops and misses.

Oh and I also had a fully charged battery, I charged it on my home charger before I started testing sensor and such.

I have a straight through exhaust with no cats, I have a new muffler in place of the car and two cherry bombs for my stacks. No clogs that I know of, and I have pacesetter headers.

Is there any special reason you run copper plugs. How old are the plug wires, autolite or motorcraft single platinum plugs are fairly cheap and much better plugs. If you dont know how old the wires are now would be a good time for new ones if you have the money.
