My son and I rebuilt his 95 2.3l from the ground up. The engine has less than 10k miles and is drinking a quart of oil every 1k miles or less. The truck runs great, the compression is within norms, we changed the PCV valve and there are NO leaks. It does blow a little smoke on start-up, but nothing while accelerating or idle.

Anyone have any ideas or similar experiences?

Reads like valve stem seals/valve guides.

+1

I would pull the head off again and have a valve job done on it. Wount hurt anything to have it shaved flat to.

Or did you have one done on it already. I would think something isn't sitting right.

Yes. Top end someplace.
After idling for say 3 to 5 minutes and you jump on the throttle do you get some oil smoke that goes away? Valve guides/seals can eat a lot of oil.
