Which mod do you think will give me more bang for my buck?

Would be using a 2.3t out of an 87 or 88 Tbird with an LA3 pcm.

Using a free spin hub kit on the Dana 30 I have installed under my Ranger.

After completing the 2wd to 4wd SAS with 31" tires the old 2.3 is a little under powered.

Let me know your thoughts.

Turbo by far. The free wheeling hubs honestly don't rob that much power. It's more for wear/vibration in older vehicles. Modern vehicles have better technology and better packaging, allowing for better angles, tighter tolerances, and otherwise more reliability, which is why you don't see them very much anymore.

What gears are you running?

I have a 2.3 in my daily driver, with 30x9.50's and 3.73s. It would really benefit from a change to 4.10 although I have gotten used to it. Anything less than that would be really painful... I think in your case 4.56's would really bring it to life, or even deeper gears if you don't drive it on the street a lot.

If you have access to turbo parts, you should do that as well. The free spin stuff is probably not worthwhile.
