I was once told that the 79/80 pinto had the same engine as the 4 cyl.Rangers ,is that true and will a pinto 4 speed tranny work in a ranger with a 4 cyl. Hope Ron jumps in he should know.

Read. The lima 2.3 was introduced for the 1974 model year in both the Pinto and Mustang II. The Ranger edition showed up when the reduced size Ranger was introduced almost a decade later(1983).
Many parts will mix and match, with the ignition and induction systems being the most diverse.

Started life off in 1970 as a 1.3l SOHC, in Europe

In 1972/3 the 2.0l/2.3l SOHC versions started to be made at the Ford Lima, Ohio engine plant
So are called Lima engines and also Pinto engines because these were first used in Pintos in 1974 model year

Yes, a transmission from a 2.0l, 2.3l or 2.5l Lima engine will have same bolt pattern for bell housing.
Can't say about input shaft and drive shaft match ups

1979 Pinto could have the 2.8l V6 or the 2.3l Lima
1980 Pintos only had the 2.3l
1980 was also the last model year for the Pinto

Rangers had the 2.3l until 1997, last year for the 2.3l
2.5l was used in Rangers until mid year 2001, it was replaced by 2.3l DOHC Duratec engine(Mazda L engine)

Although I am not sure using an almost 40 year old transmission would be a good idea, lol

140ci = 2300cc = 2.3l

I should have explained about the tranny , it was taken out of the pinto in 1981 and only had 16000 miles on it and has been stored ever since ,the car was built into a drag car so the tranny should only need new seals. The engine was toast though ,the guy that I bought it from ran it with no oil and we all know what happened then !!!!��

The Pinto had two engines available at introduction. The 1.6l OHV 'kent' and the 2.0 german-produced dohc, both available through the 1973 model year.
The "Lima" was introduced in the 1974 model year. It was produced in a 2.0l displacement for the Ranger. The 2.0 in the Pinto remained the German product, with mechanical valve lifters.
I have not one bit of a clue as to the reasoning behind the production of a 2.0l engine at the Lima, OH plant for the Ranger. It may have been a 'fleet' option for meter-readers to use, never being expected to carry anything other than one driver. Certainly under-powered for any loaded vehicle. IMO.

Yep i had a pinto with 8 spark plugs mine 99 b2500/ranger truck
