If you were to buy a 2nd gen cab, strip it down to bare metal, would 1st gen stuff bolt right in? Dash, seats, column etc?

Also will it bolt to the frame mounts in the same way?

1983 thru 1992 used the same size cabs
1993 and up were wider

There is some disagreements on "Gens", lol
1983 thru 1992 is Gen 1................
But some say 1983 thru 1988 is Gen 1, and 1989 thru 1992 is Gen 2 because the front body style changed
I would say 1989 thru 1992 is Gen 1.5 :)

So if Gen 1 is 1983 thru 1992 and Gen 2 is 1993-1997 then no, interior dash would not fit for swapping either direction

I know the 93+ cabs are way different.

Im just asking because im thinking about picking up a cab this summer for rusty 2.0. 89-92 (hows that? Lol) cabs seem to be eaiser to come by in solid shape.

But i hate everything about the 89-92 dash/interior.

Thats why i was curious if 83-88 seats, dash, column etc etc will bolt right into a 89-92 cab.

There's some slight differences but if you have both side by side you should be able to make things work, the core support is different but the body mounts should be in the same spot I think.

Im gonna shoot for an 83-88 cab.

But they seem to be alot harder to find without driving clear to new mexico or something.

I might post pics of my cab when i get ready, its possible its saveable. But im not sure. My bro in law has done alot of body patching on his YJ so im sure the box wouldnt take alot to save. But the cab is...iffy. Im mostly worried about where the doorposts go to the rockers and the windsheild frame.

Fenders are subtly different at A-pillar between the '83-88 and '89-92s - the fender didn't just bolt right up. We probably could have made things work, but we found the desired fender, so gave up on the whole front clip thing.

Were you putting 2nd gen fenders on a 1st gen cab or vice versa?

I'm going to say Gen 1 fender on Gen 2. But it really doesn't matter - the fact that the A-pillar angle wasn't the same made it a non-starter.

Eff what everyone else says.
1983-1988 = Gen 1
1989-1992 = Gen 2
...

In my near 23 years of being around rangers and a member of this and other Ranger forums, this is the first time I've hever heard of this issue.

Core support and inner fenders? Sure they are different and should be swapped with the fenders and grille. Firewall and rest of the cab? Only minor differences like mounting points for the dash. I can't recall about the doors and door panels. Obviously door panels are different, but I don't recall if they will interchange on the doors.

I think the inner panels will interchange. Ive seen 1st gen trucks with 2nd gen panels so i would assume you could go the other way.

Just from pics anyways i cant tell a difference between 2nd gen and 1st gen fenders at the a pillar. Not saying the difference isnt there, just in pics they look the same.

Next time i see a 2nd gen in person ill look closer. Unfourtantly i dont know anyone with a 2nd gen to really compare

Back when I had an 84 Ranger and my dad had a 90 BII they were parked sided by side fairly often. The a pillar area looked the same to me.

You said something about dash mounting...any idea how different it is?

Nope, no experience there. Never took them out myself, just repeating what I recall reading in the past.

From what I understand, the firewall is different. you will be doing some serious tweaking and re-engineering to get a gen 1 dash to hook up and be functional to a Gen 2 firewall. As I understand it, the firewall is the same for a 92 and 93 as the dash did not change event though the body was completely different. so if you are prepared to cut and weld in the gen 1 firewall, you should be good.

A pillar is the same on both, how the front fenders mate up to it and the hood might be different, but I am reasonably sure that someone has done a gen 1 to 2 doghouse swap on here.

There have been a few interior and front clip swaps here over the years. I don't remember any of them cutting/welding unless they changed the core support by itself.

Which is necessary apparently for the headlights to mount correctly.
