That is a pretty common thing. The Ranger isn't the only vehicle model that comes from the factory like that. It helps keep the cost of the vehicle down for those who don't know any better. A good locker runs for around $600-$1,000 depending on the design.
My Super Duty 4x4 (non-FX4) has that issue. Someone put an open 3.73 under there. Makes it feel like the truck has no nuts at all.
Depending on the age and odometer of the truck, rather than $600-1k for a locker I'd grab a whole axle with locker from the junkyard in the $150 range. Swap fluid & brakes, bolt up, hit the road. The 4.10s are great on this truck.
