On a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4, 4.0L with automatic transmission.

Here's what is probably a stupid question.

Does the transfer case servo motor switch out of neutral and into low or high when the switch is activated... or ... does it only change from low to high range...ie, does the front drive shaft always turn but is switch from low to high by the motor???

I'm wondering if installing front manual locking hubs still need the servo motor to function to activate 4WD if you do NOT need to use the 4WD-Low??

Thank you in advance for fielding this question.

Well, what are the positions on your switch?

They are 2wd, 4-hi, and 4-low.

That means when the switch is pointed at 2wd you are in 2wd, no power to the front output of the t-case.
Also, there is no neutral position on the electric shift transfer cases.

Well there is....but there is no detent for it nor does the motor know where it is. Pretty much what the ford neutral tow kit does is allows the case to find the neutral position.

Thanks for the responses... I thought that the 2wd position might have only disengaged the vacuum hubs.

So, on a 1999 Ranger 4x4, the front drive shaft is switched into neutral as well as the hubs being disengaged.

Is there any harm in running the T-case in 4-hi with the hubs unlocked??

With manual hubs unlocked no....but 4x4 high is the same gear wise as 2wd
