Hey folks. So Ive been working on my new (to me) ranger for the last few weeks tinkering with different things. It is giving me error codes p0102 and p1443. I cleared the codes and it gave me just p0102 so I removed the MAF sensor and cleaned it as best I could with brake cleaner (i didnt have access to MAF cleaner), let it dry and replaced it. Took the truck for a 20km drive and filled it up with fuel. It runs alot better but still not right on (kind of a stutter sometimes, especially when just getting going). Plugged the computer in when i got back and now its giving me both codes again. Should I replace the MAF, re-clean it with MAF cleaner or start working on the p1443 code? My assumption was that it might have been giving p1443 as a result of the p0102 code, is this possible/correct?
Thanks for any advice everyone! Im learning so much about these trucks, its awesome!

P0102 MAF circuit low input.
P1443 Evap system control valve low/no flow.

Don't think either of those is related to the other. Replace the purge control valve for the evap charcoal canister and that should get rid of the 1443. (a junkyard part is fine)

The MAF code means the signal from the MAF to the ECU is lower than the ECU expects it to be. There can be several reasons for this. Either a wiring problem such as a pinched wire or poor connection. Or a failing MAF sensor.
Brake cleaner is very harsh, and could have damaged the MAF. You should pretty much never clean electronics with brake cleaner.
Id make sure the plug for the MAF is tight and all the pins are clean. Check the wiring for any sign that it might have chaffed or been pinched. If that all checks out good replace the MAF. Again a junkyard part should be fine for this. I wouldn't expect to pay more than $25 or $30 for a junkyard MAF.

sweet man thanks. just called the JY and got them to run out and look for the Purge Control Valve (although I suspect after reading what I just typed the guy will think im nuts as I didnt specify the purge control valve was for the Carbon Cannister... he prolly thinks Im looking for a PCV valve oops.) and the MAF sensor so im hoping its one of those two things. I really am leaning towards it being the MAF as I had a similar problem with my 99 Mazda 626 and thats what it was. Ill keep my fingers crossed and let you all know what works out.
Thanks again Lincoln...

UPDATE: Just got back from the JY and installed a new (tome) MAF and cleared the code using my reader. ran the truck for about fifty k but she seems to still be running rich. Filled it up (full full) and low and behold it started pissing out gas (Im assuming i overfilled or is there a leak I should be worried about between the fill hose and tank?). This i assumed would cover the rich running smell. Got it home just now and have P1443 still (to be expected) but also p0133 came up which i assume is the o2 sensor getting bad data from the p1433 code. Im gonna check to make double sure i reinstalled all the sensor along the vaccuum stream with the appropriate directional flow (stranger things have happened right?) and take of the neg battery cable to hopefully reset everything and go from there. if the p1443 gets thrown up again ill replace that sensor as well...

anyone got any input for the n00b?

man im sure learning alot about working on these things :)
if only i could get the mechanical crap over with and get to what i know which is fabbing and :icon_welder: cool stuff for it.

follow up: so now im getting an o2 sensor code as well as the other previously mentioned ones. My question is before i go replacing multiple sensors to try and fix the problem, could this all be caused by the leak in the fuel filler spout? I am assuming if the leak is big enough im losing vaccuum thereby throwing all the sensors of no?
I ran to crappy tire this morning and got a vaccuum tester so i will have a go with that and see what i can assertain as well as picked up some RTV sealant to do a rough patch job (as i saw on another thread) until such time as i can get a new fuel filler line. The wreckers is supposed to call me back later today to let me know if they can find one.
