Hey guys,

I have a 1997 2.3L 5spd with a little over 180K miles on it. I've had the truck for a very long time, but it was on extended loan to a family member that didn't take the best care of it. It's in dire need of some TLC and seems to have lost some of what little power it had to begin with. I am planning on the following:

  • Fuel Filter
  • Air Filter (done already)
  • Timing Belt
  • Coolant Flush
  • Plugs & Wires
  • Seafoam Treatment (vacuum and fuel tank only)
  • Transmission Oil Change

What else should I be looking at to replace/clean to restore some of its power? I'm sure the cat is probably clogged up, I occasionally get a faint smell of sulfur in the cab. No CEL and it starts up and runs just fine.

How big of a job is it to pull the injectors to clean them? Is it worth just replacing them, or perhaps the Seafoam in the fuel and vacuum line is enough?

Years ago when I was younger and the truck was new to me, I paid a shop to do what sounded like a fog treatment where they introduced some type of cleaner into the intake. Is such a thing even worth paying someone to do over just running Seafoam into the brake booster line?

Hard to say...

a compression test would guide my wallet.
