1996 Ranger temp gauge question

So I grounded the temp sender wire and turned the key on. Gauge needle went backwards. What is that telling me?
 
Then take the wire off ground and let it hang in the air. If the needle then goes full scale to the opposite side, then that is telling you your wiring and your dash gauge are working, and the sending unit is not, if you had a problem with it.
 
So I accidentally fixed the problem. I had put a 2001 Explorer cluster in and transfered the 96 temp gauge with the 92 ohm resistor. So today, I desoldered the resistor and put it on the explorer gauge. It works perfect now.
