1993 ranger tail light pproblem

1993 Ranger 4x4
tail lights were working fine.
hooked up trailer and tail lights went out and wouldn't come back on- fuses ok
bulbs are ok and brake lights work
1/2 hour later tail lights work again
plug in trailor and tail lights go out- brake lights still work
WTH ?
is there something in the cicuit that cuts out the tail lights if something is wrong and then resets after a period of time. Thanks for any info

probably a bad connection where the trailer connecter joins the harness, common problem.

also, double check the grounds. make sure they are all tight as well. just a thought.
