Hello, everyone.
I know this has been discussed many times, so apologies in advance, but there is just one thing I have not clear yet. Can I do this conversion on a 1988 Ranger with 2.9L and KM146 manual transmission? I have searched in the forum, and google it, but still not clear for me if this is only possible in the Gen2 Rangers. Again, apologies for bringing this topic back to discussion. Thanks in advance!

You do realize a 2.9 has more potential for power than a 4.0, right?

That is the same engine that is in your ranger running 535hp to the rear wheels with a properly sized turbo annnnd not much else.

No, a 4.0 ohv can not and will never under any circumstance be able to do that. Ever.

Even with mild and intelligent modification it is considerably less work to get your 2.9 to outwork a 4.0.

A megasquirt and some porting work will net you more than a 4.0 swap. My tunes are posted in the tech section for free, and I always answer PMs asking for help @MarkusMcBride

Also. 2.9 forum is not the right place to ask about how to put the wrong engine in your vehicle.

I came of of hiatus for this. Do real homework. They're capable of serious power if you know what you're doing. Not being a d*ck. Just facts. 4.0 is not always the answer.

In all seriousness though, if you are still convinced you need/want to do this, it is possible, and I believe there is a whole section of the site dedicated to the 4.0 swap, and I distinctly remember someone doing a write up on doing it in a first gen. There was something about getting the guages to jive. It may have been related to a first gen bronco 2 swap, which is identical.

Did you reply to the wrong thread? He's not asking about an engine swap. He's asking about using the 4.0 clutch system on his 2.9 and tm146 transmission.
LOL.
Go back into your corner and don't come out until you've thought about what you did..../jk.

He probably did respond to the wrong thread... He hasn’t been here in a while and forgot how everything works around here.

Guys i think hes just wanting to put a 4.0 clutch on his 2.9...lol

The 4.0 clutch swap can be done on any 2.9L as long as it has a manual transmission.

Ohhhhh!!!! Haha! Oops!
Yes! I guess I'll have to keep my mouth shut the next time I get annoyed when someone doesn't read ALL the instructions!
(Umm, what they said ^ )
