Hi, I recently bought a 1988 Ford Ranger XLT from my buddy. Been driving it for a few days and I've encountered a problem.

Truck starts and idles great with no issue. After a few minutes of driving, it'll completely shut off. Like someone turned the ignition off to it mid drive. After I stop, put it in park, it starts right back up again with no issue. Then it'll carry on the day with no problem. This only occurs if I let it sit for a little bit. Example being if I go inside a store and come back an hour later. It'll drive just fine and bam, it shuts off again. Rinse and repeat.

I have no idea where to start with it. Any pointers or help?

Welcome to the forum

Reads like a fairly common issue with the TFI Module that is on the side of the distributor
When they get older they get heat sensitive and will just stop working, no spark

Could also be the Coil, they can have the same symptom, but TFI module is more likely

TFI basics seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TFI_Diagnostic.shtml

Tfi.

Don't buy aftermarket ones. They are shit. Can confirm.

I ran across a post over on the Bronco Corral the other day. It helps to relocate your TFI module to help keep it cool. If you aren't into the DIY route to make this happen... the link has a preassembled kit to do so.

@Uncle Gump Coming through with the link!! that's awesome!
@PetroleumJunkie412 is Motorcraft the best/only option with these?

@TexasDuck66 You might also check the ground attached to the intake plenum. Sometimes it can wiggle loose, and I think it grounds a number of fuel system components.

Also, GREAT lookin truck.
Appreciate it, she's a head turner and I'm actually in the Navy and currently stationed in Pensacola. I get a lot of compliments and head turners when I drive around. One of a kind truck.
