so i just picked up a 1988 bronco 2 for 400$ when accelerating it grinds and pops. sorta like a bicycle with a chain that is too loose i have not climbed underneath but the PO claims its the Tcase.

the tcase is a manual shift model coupled to a 5spd with 2.9 v6

does the tcase have a solid connection from the tranny to the rear DS or can it slip

Check the rear drive-shaft. If it has a CV joint in the middle of it, that could be your problem. Some BIIs had them and they are notorious for going out.

Yes, prolly your rear driveshaft is the crappy cv-joint style and is worn out. If it is, get yourself a standard u-joint style preferably with the larger Ranger/BII u-joints and rebuild it if necessary.

alright i went out and started her up, put the tcase in neutral and i have no noise. so i guess ive eliminated the tranny.

now just need to narrow it down from the tcase and d/s now

it does have a cv joint style driveshaft
