1988 2.9l sputtering

I have an 88 that has a cali ecm but no maf to my knowledge just the map. Could the ecm be my issue? My old ecm melted and the company told me this was the correct ecm with cali emissions.

I replaced the tfi already to try that fix but its not ford. The car idles fine and in neutral it revs just fine. In gear after a few mins it boggs down and cant go over id guess 1500 to 2000rpm. No tach on these things makes it kinda hard to guess.

I'd recommend OEM TFI O'Reilly's has them for $100. If your TFI is gray, it's the wrong one.

All 2.9's had a grey TFI

Well i was fearing it may be the tank hahaha didnt want to drop it. Did it once before to fix the float and saw some stuff in there but was hoping i wouldn't have to drain it. Sounds like you had the same issue im having now with that pump and tank though. My tanks pretty rusty i think ill look into a plastic tank so it doesn't get rust belted anymore. Should I replace the tanks pump as well to be on the safe side? Ill at least get a new screen for it. I can at least wait for inline pump since its alot easier access
If youre replacing the tank you might as well replace the pump/sender assembly too...and probably the filler neck if it looks iffy. No sense in doing it twiceu

I could not find a filler neck replacement anywhere. Do you know of any places selling one?

Got pump and tank on the way. If it doesn't fix my issue ill do the inline pump next i guess. Then ill start troubleshooting eec and sensors if that doesn't work. At least i will know fuel is capable of flowing to the engine properly then. I have also never seen a filler neck for sale. Ive looked around mine is still fully intact but not sure how much longer that will last.

Ok I might have that reversed lol it's been a while since I did the job. Anyways aftermarket TFI was making my ranger sputter between 2-3k rpm and would have a misfire.

I may have to look into getting a motorcraft tfi module then. I know i bought an aftermarket one for around 30 instead. Really didnt want to pay the 120 for it. I may try and grab an oem one out of a junkyard and plug it in. That way if the problem goes away i know to get a new motorcraft one instead when it goes again.
