Hi guys and gals,

I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate if I could get some links to previous posts, or advice.

As the title says, stock NA 2.3. Somewhere between 307k and 407k, we think. Prev owner knows odo was rolled once when he got it, then he rolled it "at least twice, three times, I think." :shok: Typical rust in various places but she runs pretty decent. The head was just redone (I believe just a clean and valve job), but no bottom end work.

The truck has a rattle *like nuts and bolts in an aluminum coffee can in a paint shaker* at constant speed when in 4th and 5th gear. Ex: Cruising @ a smooth 55 in 5th gear sounds like the exhaust system is about to come off. It is not a hard banging, like something beating around, but a fine rattle. I initially suspected an exhaust shroud, but everything is tight. Ideas?

There is a slight knock, and I mean really slight, in 1st - 3rd gears at low rpm. I have no idea what that would be. It goes away as soon as I get on the gas a little. I'm also buring about a quart of 10w-40 every 1k miles. No leaks, standard blueish smoke at the tailpipe, oil on white cloth. I suspect tired rings. Suggestions here say go up to 20w-50 so I'm grabbing that this afternoon. An automech friend suggested Bar's Engine Repair with the 20w-50. Any other ideas/suggestions? *Please see below before reply to this paragraph*

I'm currently putting away the cash to order a new 2.3 NA Lima for this truck. *SNIP* I'm looking for mostly longevity, and "Can we even kill this thing?!" :icon_surprised: durability *SNIP*

::EDIT::
So... anyone have a suggestion on where to by a reman'd 2.3 for my '86? I would _really_ like this to be a drop-in install.
I'm willing to pay a little more for a solid motor that's spec'd correctly from a company with a good background.
I'd really like to avoid having to do any major re-wiring. :)

Esslinger et al are not in my performance or price range. I'm not building a race truck.
She's gonna be a daily driver and I'd like to keep my fuel economy, which is why i'm trying to avoid the v-8 mod. (That's for another truck...or maybe later.)

::END-EDIT::

A final note in relation to the above, the current motor is not going to be a "lifer." It only _needs_ to survive about 6 months. If I can get a year out of it I'd be really happy so I can get the self-build done. So any suggestions on keeping the current motor alive that are "once and run till it dies" are ok. :icon_thumby:

After that... it's time for the body work and suspension:icon_welder:which are other posts for other parts of the forum.

Thanks again,
Jay

sound like your pinging. have your timing checked. or put a higher octane fuel in it and see if it goes away.

and do not rev this engine out. if you have to 4,000 rpm max.

mine had a ping to it, but i thought i fixed it. rev'ed it out to 5,000 rpm. blew a hole in the number 2 piston.

truck only had 78,000 miles on it.
