All,

I am new to this forum and have not been very succesful finding information with the search function on my topic. I have a 1985 diesel Ranger with a 2.3 (4D55T) motor. The truck will not start, but will turn over. I am getting fuel to the injectors and the glow plug system is functioning properly. The truck ran for the previous owner, until he tried to investigate a small leak on the top of the injector pump. Where the throttle cable hooks up to the injector pump, he removed the lever to investigate the leak and could not figure out how to get it back together. It contains two springs that appear to fit into the one another and a metak clf shield that retains the springs. In his defence, it is harder to figure out the proper configuration than it should be. I am hoping someone out here can help with a discription or even better a picture of how it goes together. I am in desprite need of help.:icon_confused:

I'm thinking this is a perkins engine. I'll look it up and tell you how to put it back together, sounds like the fuel shut off was disabled.:shok:

Heartwrenches……..Thanks for the quick response. The engine in my truck is a 2.3L Mitsubishi (4D55T).

Is the pump in anyway taken apart or is the linkage just taken off the end of the shaft?:icon_confused:

The lever was just off the shaft on top of the injector pump when I purchased the truck. I needed to reassemble the following: nut, half moon retaining washer and two return springs. I did my best and cannot get the truck to fire. I took a few pictures and will post as soon as I find out how to do so.

I'm having trouble finding the ranger engine, but in the cars the springs oppose each other for cold and hot start modes. Before worrying about the springs put the linkage on in such that it can move back and forth with the throttle cable in position.
( if its on upside down the cable will bind ):icon_cheers:

Then you should be able to put the springs on
( probably one at a time )
and see were they anchor with slight tension.
Make sure the throttle pedal is up and the cable and linkage are in the idle position.
( all the way back ):icon_cheers:

The linkage can only go on two ways, one being right.

If the linkage has a bend or taper, it will point away from the pump.
( that will give you right side out ):icon_cheers:

Thanks for the response. I have looked and still cannot find out how to post pictures on in the form, it keeps pointing me to the browser to add the image. I really appreciate the detail in your reply. If I read it right, you install the lever first, then both springs and the retainer. Currently I have the two springs on first, then the lever and lastly the retainer and nut. Did the book you found have a diagram or picture? If you would like PM me and I can send you the picture I have taken and cannot figure out how to load. Thanks again for your help.

I recently resealed the injection pump on my 86 ranger it was leaking
around throttle shaft. Anyways it is most likely that you need to remove the linkage from the shaft coming out of the pump turn the shaft counter clockwise some and reinstall linkage. May have to try a few times to get right
supposed to mark before removing linkage so that it is reinstalled in exact location. Otherwise pump is not sending enough fuel to start engine or run
Hope this helps.
