My current study, is based upon filters that cross reference the Motorcraft FL-1A. Why this filter? A: it's a very popular filter, B: it is relatively large, thus it'll be more obvious to see flaws, C: you can compare one to the other as far as what you get for the price you pay. What led me to this study? curiosity. The purpose? To discover and share the information I find on oil filters. I'm currently in the infancy stage of the "study", but there should be some that will appreciate my findings. Who knows, this may change your aspect on filters! These are shot from my droid, I have nothing better to film with.

Starting with the most common to have a bad reputation:

The step up from the PH8A (filmed before the PH8A, I make ONE blooper about what you pay extra for, you also get more filter media, not just the screen on the bypass)

And now, I show you the worst I've found thus far:

The best 2 dollar filter... period:

Next up... Motorcraft FL-1A, Purolator Classic L30001, Purolator PureOne PL30001

I've actually been contacted over the weekend by a Fram sales account manager.

Well, I'm still kind of waking up, but I'll get to the filming of the next 3 filters today and upload them.

Thanks for putting these videos out Kemo! I always love the quality that Bosch puts out, so when I recently changed my oil, I decided to pick up a Bosch Premium OE Select 72143 Oil Filter. Maybe you can try that one out? I would love to know how good of filtration my 3.sl0w is getting.

Don't mind if I do... just gotta discover it in a store and I'll strongly consider it. HOWEVER... there are 2 different part numbers for what is seemingly the same filter. There is the 3500 and the 72102 (cross reference of the current filter I do). I'll see what they have locally, more than likely, it is a Purolator.

I try to be as unbiased as possible when filming. I leave it to the viewer to decide.

You get quite a bit more of filter media for they money spent on the Purolators when compared to the Napa filters. Whether or not the Napa (Wix) filter media is better than the Purolator is beyond me... but the quality of fitting of the anti drain back valves and how the bypass valves are (anti drain back valve sits loosely on the bypass, bypass sits loosely in the end cap), those 2 things right there push me away from buying Napa/Wix.

I ordered my filter off rockauto.com, which is where I buy all my parts from, since I usually replace a bunch of stuff at once. I think Bosch is their own manufacturer, so it might not be anything like a Purolator with a Bosch label on it. Thanks for all the vids, they really lend some great insight!

So Bosch, Purolator, Quaker State, and Motorcraft are all the same thing?

No, they aren't the same thing, they are made under the same roof. Bosch MAY be the exception though, they WERE made by Champ Labs at one point in time in the past 15 years, and then switched to Purolator. If I find one, I'll cut it open to confirm who makes it now.

The one thing I notice you haven't said anything about is the media thickness and composition, such as paper, cotton guaze, etc.
Any way you can list this for each?

I do not have a tool that is reliable enough to measure that small. One could easily fudge the results by over tightening a micrometer and squeezing the element.

Would really like to see a K&N filter myself and who manufactures it for them.
