i got the one that just sits on the seat. works for me as it also gives me an elevated place to rest my right arm.
now i'm going on a long trip and taking the dog. the small seat in my '83 is just barely big enough for her and i without seat console. so for a cheap and temporary fix here is what i did:
bought a new 1 gallon paint can at the hardware store. used some left over 1/4" closed cell foam and lined the inside of the can with about 3 layers around the inside. then i had some foil faced air bubble pipe insulation and went around twice with that. used the scrap pieces to put in the bottom so it will elevate the cup/bottle a little. took off the bail and used small bungee cords to anchor it to the back of the seat using the seat belt buckles.
holds every thing from a 20oz bottle to a 52oz plastic cup sold at the gas stations. keeps the ice in the cup from melting for hours really. cheap, easy, and works! more room now for the dog, and i can get my drink easily as well. :D

If you go to the junk yard you can get the shift boot console dealie out of a 95+ that has cup holders built in.
