My sister bought her car brand new, so we’ve Tryed to keep up the maintenance on it. From the first oil change we’ve always used high quality filters/oil.

I’ve always been a royal purple fan, till I signed up for amsoil and got an even better deal on that. After the engine was well broke in (20,000 miles) we started sending in oil samples to black stone laboratories. 1st column is the 10k mile amsoil, with amsoil filter. 3rd column is the royal purple.

I do them all the time. I used a different company when I did samples on aircraft fluids but they were way too expensive for automotive use. I was excited when I found blackstone. 30 bucks and you get the sample kit and shipping free. Can't beat that! I do wish they would stop sending me sample containers though... they are like AOL floppy discs in the 90's, ive got a pile of them and they just keep coming.

I had a drop in steal/iron and aluminum wear levels when I switched from motorcraft to pennzoil ultra on my ranger which is neat to see that one oil actually does do something.

Yep, every so often just to see how things are doing, Haven't done the Ranger yet but have done the 1999 CR-V a few times.

That's pretty cool. I always thought of Royal Purple as being one of the top of the line products. I know Amsoil is good stuff but pricy. I actually watched a video the other day comparing Amazon Basic's synthetic to mobil1 and Valvoline. The Amazon motor oil actually beat the other two on the tests and the guy was pretty good about being consistent with the testing. Here is a link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9DWGtXpYUc

If you signup for amsoil and pay like 20$ a year there oil is like half the cost of royal purple.

I refuse to "sign up" to buy oil.

Not to mention royal purple and amsoil both absolutely suck in extreme cold anyway.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
blackstone and polaris i use at work.

never seen anything beat mobil 1 in real world testing for gasoline engines..

the difference between regular pennzoil and ultra is scary. ultra is really good oil. i wouldnt use regular pennzoil to start a dumpster fire. my vehicles idle ridiculous amounts of time and also put high miles on in short periods.

testing can be worth it if your keeping something long term. do a baseline on something new to you with a 10 k follow-up, and maybe 50-75 k.

for the average person that changes their oil at 3-7 k intervals its a piss waste of money....your spending more to analyze the oil then to change it...

you would have to be retarded to do that. most current oil and engine systems its a piss waste of money to change before 10 k for normal driving.

if you drive 50-100 k a year and run a bypass filter with some premium oil like mobil 1 or the penn ultra, and want to do 25-50 k oil change intervals its definitely worth the effort. of course you need to run the high efficiency oil filters (like pure 1) and change those at 5 k or so intervals...

so when running long oil change intervals, paying 30 bux for an analysis every 20 k makes sense that way.

theres quite a few people i know that have not sump changed their engine at 100 plus k.

oil dont wear out...just gets shit in it and cooked off...

but with normal maintenance i expect 250 k out of any fuel injected engine in a 10 year period.

so a bypass filter and oil analysis is a waste for most people.

I have 175k on my F-150 with Motorcraft 5-20, wife had 225k on her Edge with Valvoline High Mileage 5-20 (her dad started that before I came along otherwise it would be MC also)

I have never done a test but they run great and frankly are well on their way to outlast the husks that they are in, I can't ask for much more than that. :dntknw:

No need to be offensive when someone is just showing what their results were. And yes oil will wear out. its called viscosity, and it breaks down over time and use.

Ummm blackstone will tell you exactly how much life is left in your oil to give you a proper oil change interval for your engine and drivng. Saying 10k for everyone is absurd. If you do all short trip city driving and idle alot you're nuts going 10k.

^This^

Both of my 4.0s get driven on short trips only, and rarely make it to full operating temp. They get changed every 6 months regardless of miles.

The Mustang gets changed when it starts ticking, because it's a 5 qt engine that is 3 qts low at that point. It needs a valve cover gasket, and maybe a rear main seal.

The Expedition gets up to temp almost every time, but gets few miles put on through a year. It gets Mobil 1 EP, M1 filter, and changed when I remember the stuff is on sale.

I love 20 minutes from anything other than a small country store. So my vehicles get drove around 200 miles a week maybe more depending on what we do on the weekend. I try to change mine every 3-4k but I use cheap oil. I'm at the point with my truck where if it blows up then it gives me an excuse to buy a new truck. Actually, I was using the cheapest oil from Walmart until I could change it at work with what we have in a drum. I'm cheap so I don't like spending a lot of money on things unless I have to. I've spent no more than $20 for any oil change I've ever done. It's a ranger, not a Ferrari. I've used that cheap Walmart oil numerous times with no issues. I have bad luck with vehicle whenever I try to do something "nice" to them so I try not to "treat" vehicles with top of the line oil lol.

We do these all the time for aircraft engines since you change oil like every 25 hrs.
