In my case, it started out as learning/value of money exercise for my kids: I'm not wealthy enough to afford a brand new car for each of them, and I didn't want my daughters to be stuck on side of road waiting for someone to help.
And it has worked out well (mostly).
I paid insurance rates for 15+ year old vehicles.
All 3 know how to change a tire, that when check engine light comes on/brakes start squeaking - fix it now, not after the car stops, they can all drive manuals, etc.
They also have more appreciation for working - if you want the shiny WRX, you have to put down the video game and do something about it.
And financially, the 14 vehicles cost me ~$750 each, I spent about $500 in parts and certifications (heavy on brakes), and sold the 4 for over $4k each.
p.s. All of my vehicles have a 4 sale sign on them - you pay what I'm asking and you have yourself a new to you RBV - no sentiment attached. (OK, maybe a little, the SCLB V-8 has an asking price that makes most buyers cringe but I spent $5k on the engine alone).
