I know of some guys and some guys on 460ford.com who has put 9 inch rears in their rangers for racing and bogging.

Nothing to it but to weld and shorten the driveshaft....but the right shocks, etc.

you guys all on crack? yeah lots of people have put them in a ranger...but with a matching full width axle up front.

You do realize that the 9" is a fullwidth axle right? and will protrude out the sides of a ranger quite a bit?

flanges are different, spring perches and all that jazz would have to be changed.

easy task, yes. but not a strictly bolt in affair.

not to mention it would look stupid with a stock width axle up front.

What I meant by fairly bolt in was moving the perches and such, and I agree it would either need narrowed or a fw front end

Well not all 9 inches are fullwidth... you get get one from an early bronco... the only thing i see as an issue is that the lug pattern is different.

You're looking at a 5x5.5 bolt pattern and like 60 plus inches wide.
Just weld on new perches. Find a yoke online for a...damn I forgot what u joint number...4140 or something not sure.
Its not hard if you can read a tape measurer and can weld. Just pay attention to pinion angle when welding on the perches.

I'm going to use a 9" when I do a D44 knuckle swap this winter. Cut the axle tubes to whatever length(width) you want. Get a chromoly axle kit that gives you the big bearing kit to weld onto the axle tubes. The axles come with plenty of spline to cut them to your desired length! Then it's the same as a 8.8 Exploder swap. Benefits are a FULL spool can be used, 5 on 5 bolt pattern and I'm a big fan of the 3rd member drop outs. Here in Canada I can get the chromoly axle kit for $320.00 from a local 4x4 shop. It's only a 28 spline chromoly axle but I'm sure they're just as strong maybe stronger than a stock 31 spline 8.8!

Are you running a fuel cell? I remember on my truck that the drive shaft was very close to the fuel tank on the driver's side. Not sure how much closer you'd be if you change the offset on the rear end - but something to watch out for if you're still using a stock tank.

Not only that............the late 70's, early 80's Lincoln Versailles (gloried Granada) had 9" rears with disc brakes & only measured 54". I looked at swappin one into a 79 Malibu I raced back in the late 80's & early 90's, as the G-bodies 7.5's were crap, but they measured 52 1/2", so the Versailles 9" could be used with minimal mods.

Anything from a versailles, granada, etc will have a 5 x 4.5 pattern they're the rarer type 9 inch. Using a 28 spline non tapered axle and big bearings. Its what I'm running in my truck.
