I have been reading the tec library but still have a few questions:
I have an 86 Ranger ext cab i want to swap to a D35 up front but im not sure what the best doner rig would be?
I think one of these would be the easiest to find in the junkyard...
610366 FORD 35 FRONT 1990 1/2-92 1/2 EXPLORER
610410 FORD 35 FRONT 1993-94 1/2 EXPLORER ABS
What year D35 would be best for my swap?
I don't think i have antilock brakes on my 86, will this make a difference if i get a D35 with it?
what is the diffrence on a D35 with or with out antilock?

Thanks

as far as I know, the only difference is where the ABS sensor is on the spindle, and the rotor itself is different. You don't necessarilly have to put the sensor in for it to work.

So if i understand correctly, I could get a D35 with ABS and just not hook up the sensor than?

The Dana 35 TTB with ABS is only different by the sensor and the rotor. HOWEVER, you can remove the sensor and install a non-ABS rotor without any problems; that is what Maurice (mjones) did when we swapped the Dana 35 TTB into his '86 Bronco II. You will want to remove the sensor from the spindle, but that isn't a big deal. You can still use the ABS rotors if they are good, but you can also get new non-ABS rotors for $25 each from an auto parts store.

Everything else is a direct bolt in swap. You will have to have the front drive shaft shortened by about 1" if you are still using the BW1350 transfer case.

Are you sure you do not have a Dana 35? That you have the hybrid or a D28 ?

That is if you have NEVER had a front TTB axle out before. If you have had it out before, you should be able to do it yourself in about 1.5 hours.

BTW, the BEST TTB D35 for swapping in isn't from an early Explorer or an 11-89 up Ranger/Bronco2.

he BEST organ donor is actually a 1995-97 Ranger 4x4.

these came with a better caliper system.

the only tricky thing is to get the proper brake hoses you need to
specify at the auto parts that you have a 1997 WITHOUT ABS

that is if you wish to use stock replacement type brake hoses.

Thanks for the info AllanD, so to jack my own thread for a minute what Explorer 8.8 do you think is the best to put in a 86 ranger? Is there any differences in them besides ABS or NON ABS? I was thinking of pulling a 92 so it didn't have ABS on it.

the '91-'94 Explorers had drum brakes while the '95-'00 Explorers had disc brakes. The '91-'94 Explorer 8.8 parking brakes are easier to setup as they are the same as your stock axle. The '95-'00 Explorer axles take a bit of customizing for the parking brake to work.

If you use the disc brake 8.8, then you will have to run new hard lines on the axle and use a passenger side soft line on the driver side so you can hook up to your stock line that drops from the center of the axle. The Explorers hard line drops on the driver side of the axle.
