In my search for a v8 donor for my Yard ornament I call "my truck", I have stumbled upon some info that I found interesting and I was wondering if it was true. In a different post "rjaaaa"(?) mentioned he has a 4.6 v8 in his Ranger, mentioned I had a DOHC V8 Lincoln Continental, but would need a tranny out of a Marauder or mustang. Then "pjtoledo" mentioned something about the Continentals had a different bolt pattern than other 4.6 v8's due to having to match the Taurus drivetrain and possibly having the "Vulcan" bolt pattern. Does anybody know this to be true, or is it just ass-umptions and guestimations.

Yes, IIRC the 4.6 used multiple bell housing bolt patterns.

I don't know about the Continental, but I do know it was basically a Taurus and used an A4X trans, which the Taurus and Windstar/Freestar also used.

The version of that trans used in the Continental may match a small block. IIRC the 3.8 used the small-block 5.0 pattern, and was in the Windstars and pre-DOHC 3.0 Tauruses, and that some of the early 4.6s also used the same SBF pattern.

Now this is all speculation as I have no specific knowledge on this, but I would wager that the Continental engine is using the Essex/Windsor pattern, and not the Vulcan pattern, which I believe is different.

Thanx adsm08. pjtoledo did mentioned the Essex 3.8 pattern, but that it may be the same as the Vulcan pattern. is there any info ( pictures or pdf ) that would show the bolt patterns for the bell houses.

This: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ford_bellhousing_patterns

Says first 2 castings(numbers F1AE and F2VE) on the 4.6l block had small block Windsor pattern

Then F3VE and up 4.6l used Modular V8 pattern

And a separate pattern for the 4.6l in Lincolns

Nothing under Vulcan but this is not Ford documents just info from users

that Wiki page also has listings for the Vulcan 3.0 pattern.
included there is the 3.8 Canadian Essex V6 in FWD. aka: Taurus & Sable plus others.

the RWD 3.8 is listed as SBF pattern.

I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
The Windsor bolt pattern 4.6 SOHC was used in the early Lincoln Town Cars. IIRC, only 91-92. They were built in the Romeo plant. (Teksid built the aluminum blocks starting in 93, and The Windsor plant started building 4.6s around 97.)
Like Ron said F1 blocks will be Windsor bolt pattern, I can confirm that. I've never seen an F2 block, so I can't confirm that.

So my 98 Lincoln Conti probably has the Windsor ( F1 ) pattern. And the F2 patterns ( 91-92 LTC ) may or may NOT match the Vulcan pattern. I knew that sounded to good to be true, Thanks pjtoledo, for the info. That quad cam V8 is probably too wide for my Ranger, even if it did bolt up, I need AC.

By '98 it should have the standard modular pattern rather than the Windsor pattern.

find someone with a Hollander subscription. they publish what interchanges. some yards use them.

the corral.net forums state the Continental has a very narrow pattern, so the "Mighty Vulcan" match is still in the game.
