Yesterday I went on my intro flight to getting my pilots license. I went up with the instructor and one of his students. This was the students 3rd flight, so only basic maneuvers were done. First was cross wind flying. Basically flying in a circle or square and compensating for drift. Then maintaining air speed while the flaps were set to max then min. After that the instructor show how to decrease air speed by, well throwing the plane sideways. Finally a few sketchy touch and goes. This was the students first time landing. So now I know what to expect. Next, my turn behind the controls.

Not sure if anyone here would be interested in this, since this is a truck forum. So I'll be posting my progress for those interested at another site: http://www.adventurerslife.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=28

Sounds like you're loving it!

I got my glider pilots license in 2006 and my private in 2007. I did all my training in a 172 as well.

Once you start doing the slips on your own (the crazy sideways stuff) you'll have a blast! Quite possibly one of my most favourite things to do. That and spin initiation/recovery!

Good luck!

Awesome. I was lucky to be able to work at a small airport when I was in highschool. It was a grass runway and the owner/my employer had been teaching people to fly for probably around 40 years. He gave me a few lessons in a 172 and I loved it. I was able to get a few hours of instruction, enough to take off and land, but nowhere close to getting my license. Have fun and keep us updated :icon_thumby:

I hate flying so much that before I get in my car, I use a .001" feeler gauge under the tires to be 100% certain it's on the ground.

Last time I was on a plane was 1997, one year after I got out of the service and swore I would never fly again. After that one tumble off the wagon, I've been doing real good keeping my oath.

Let me start by saying i dont know shit about flying. Okay thats out of the way. Recently i observed a plane at the local airport flying into a strong headwind and suddenly like a bird violently flapping its wings and going nowhere, it just hung there. I understand the physics behind it and all, but then later i was watching a plane tow a glider up and it got me thinking, what would happen if the plane pulling the glider attempted such a manouver? I see it ending rather catastrophically.

I know a lot about flying:

1. It's scarey when the gauge says your traveling at 120 knots... but the schoolbus down on the highway is leaving you behind (headwind).

2. It's scarey when your landing but the wheels refuse to touch the ground(headwind again).

3. It's scarey when........who am i kidding.....I know enough to never nevre ever fly again.

Believe it or not, they actually try to do that. You'll get more lift and go less distance, generally getting the glider to altitude faster. It is creepy going backwards though...

Ground effect, it is kind of a wierd thing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_effect_in_aircraft

I went through ground school back in high school with the intentions of eventually becoming an commercial pilot. Right as I was almost done with that and was about to take the written test 9/11 happened and blew a big hole in the airline industry.

I couldn't afford to finish it and to go to college for something else, since the future didn't look all that great as a commercial pilot I went on to something else. I would love to get back into it, I really enjoyed it. :icon_thumby:
