When the Honda Insight came out years ago I read an article in a science magazine that said the occupants were exposed to a stronger electro magnetic field than if they'd stood under high tension power lines. The news media didn't pick it up because they only find it fashionable to bash US products. When the hybrid Escape showed up I was expecting the story to appear but it didn't. I was surprised. The range of electric vehicles makes them useless for me, especially when the loss of power in extreme cold is factored in. Conservatively, at least 30% of the reserve is gone when temps drop below zero, then more is used to heat the cabin, more is used to run headlights, rear defroster, wipers, etc. Due to driving habits of some people in recent years my 20 minute commute turned into 45 minutes or more in a snow storm with 2-3 miles crawling up and down hills or stopped. When you start subtracting from the total range due to these factors an electric vehicle might not get me home before it went dead. Then I would have to plug it into the power grid which gets 80% of its power from burning coal. Until we have affordable fuel cell technology electric vehicles won't save the planet.
