I am planning a two week vacation to Alaska for June of 2013. Will fly into the state, maybe Anchorage or Fairbanks, as I live on the east coast. Any suggestions would be appreciated for things to do and/or see. It will be my wife and I. Mostly sight seeing and historical interest. I have started getting brochures from the state but would like some personal input to try to avoid some of the commercialism, if possible. Thanks, Russ

I was just up there last month visiting some family, there is plenty to do. In Anchorage there a few places that talk about the earthquake in 1964 that are pretty cool. Flat Top mountain (just out of town) is an easy few hour hike that gives you a great view of the entire Anchorage area.

You can drive south along Turnagain Arm 30 minutes or so to Girdwood and Portage Glacier, although there's not much glacier to see from the visitor's center. You can take a cruise across the lake though. There's also the wildlife conservation center there, where you'd get a chance to see some wildlife you may otherwise not get to see.

If you want to see a bigger glacier, Exit Glacier in Seward is about 2 hours south and a nice drive.

Of course there's always fishing too!

Since you may be there for the solstice

You've hit two of the topics the wife has mandated. Bears and Glaciers. I'll look into the places you mention. Thanks.

The last time I was in Alaska south of Anchorage, we stopped in the parking lot to see the Portage Glacier. It looked to be about 100 feet high where it touched the lake. We also went on the ski lift to the top of the mountain near Anchorage---it was covered in snow with lots of people skiing. We drove north of Anchorage about 60 miles....saw lots of moose and a couple B-I-G porcupines.

We drove on some gravel roads thru a mountain pass...the scenery was INCREDIBLE.

(I was a little kid living in Louisiana when the big quake hit Anchorage...the water level in some of the bayous dropped 10 feet in less than a minute--then the water refilled them just as fast!)

as he said, south of anchorage is pretty good. I would definetly go around in the kenai/soldotna area. That is where you will see wild life, plus if you go around the end of july you can see the commercial fishing craziness. A good stop on the way is the russian river, cooper landing, and others. I have lived here all my life and the area is by far my favotrite

Thanks. I'll look into those areas. We are thinking about doing a motorhome rental for a week in the Fairbanks and North area. Then make a base in the Anchorage area at a motel and rent a car for a week of day tours.

My sister and her husband go dip-netting on the Kenai every summer, I think in July. It may be fun to watch, but I think I'd rather find a different spot to fish myself as it can be busy enough you're rubbing elbows with the guy nest to you.
