alright well my brother just bought a 99 dakota 4x4 from an auto auction an he took it for the first drive when he got it home an it clunks when you put it into reverse? like when you first get in the truck start it an drop it into reverse it wil clunk when the drive train tense up. ( its an automatic trans), but it doesnt do it when you go from park to drive.

is there something wrong with the tranny or? my dad thought it could be a u joint but it doesnt clunk when your driving, it will only do it when u first put it in reverse, it wont clunk when you drive in reverse either.

nah joke, try changing the fluid and filter, maybe thats giving the issue. check if the mounts are good, a bent/broken/worn out mount can mess it like that

I have found that's commom with a lot of Dodge trucks through the years. My dad's old 76 Power Wagon did it, my brother's 99 Ram 1500 2wd(when he had it) did it and my mom's 97 Dakota 4X4 does it. I gues it's more of a solid clunk vs hollow clunk thing...hollow clunk is ok (mild slippage), but a solid clunk, I would be all over and under it checking things out as the other guys have suggested.

My son has an 87. I've known the truck since it was new and it always did clunk, it clunks exactly the same now as it always did. It's still a good idea to chack the driveshaft u/j's though as the normal clunk tends to hide loose joints.

its the setup, check the fluids or replace the truck lol
