I have recently had some issues out of my 1991 2.9 auto Ranger STX 4x4.

The truck when cold couldn't keep a good idle. It would drop to ~500 RPM and die at times if you didn't keep the throttle pressed.

I hooked my code reader to the truck and got Code 51. This means the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) is out of range.

I knew the sensor shouldn't be bad because I replaced it just a few months ago. So I unplugged it to look at the connections.

Turns out that the female end of one of the pins was pushed back into the plastic harness, causing it to not make a good connection. I fixed this with some needle nose pliars and plugged it back in.

After running the codes again, Code 51 no longer comes up! Just thought I would post this for anyone who might be having the same issue. Make sure and check the connection first!
