What you are leaning toward is what I was gonna suggest.

The Taurus tracker is a good one. Double action, adjustable sights, relatively light, and holds a 7th round. Nice rubber grips too.
I am actually looking at trackers. My snub is an 856 taurus and its been a good gun for the price point. I do like the 7 round cylinder.

I carry either a S&W Shield in 9mm or a Glock 21 in 45ACP. I don't have bears to worry about though, just dogs, mountain lions and tweakers.
Well before the bear thing (their population has went up 88% since 2012 when they restricted the hunting of them) a rabid coyote or nasty 2 legged things was all i had to really worry about and i never felt my .38 wouldnt be enough for that...but yeah...facing a bear with a .38, spicially a snub, is a bit unnerving.

Just make noise while hiking... They are more scared of you, and don't carry...
On the quad i dont worry to much, A) i could outrun one easy, and B) like you said the noise. But if we rough camp on state land and cook food and stuff,.,thats when i worry. I dont see myself as a rambo or anything, but id rather have one and not need it then need it and not have it.

Id love a .500...lol. But eh im not really a huge gun enthusiast and i dont wanna drop that much coin.

It depends on the type of bear. Black bear, a .357 Magnum will work. Anything bigger, .44 Magnum.
Its only black bear up there. If we ever went to grizz country id find a way to bring my 12 and some slugs.

If bear is part of the reason to carry, I wouldn't feel comfortable with any "short" pistol cartridge personally. If for whatever reason a short cartridge was a MUST.. id pick either 10mm or .50gi

Found a nickel plated S&W .357 model 65 with a 4 inch barrel in "very good" condition at a local place for 449.

Might go check it out this week.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
Currently i carry a snub .38, but now that bears have been spotted literally where we camp/ride i think i wanna get something more.

Obviously my 12ga is ideal but not exactly easy or legal to pack on the quad.

Im leaning .357 so i can use my stash of .38 for plinking, but ive also been thinking of a .44mag.

Whats your guys opinions? No i dont want a semiauto, just not my tastes.

Yes also have bearspray, shooting it would be a total last resort, and these are blackbears, im not super worried but i really dont wanna wake up to one chewing my leg off.

So basically....woods/trail gun....357 or 44mag?

Or should i just get a longer barrel .38 and call it good?
Why is it illegal to carry a 12 gauge? Isn't Michigan still in the U.S.? I'd think it would be too big and awkward, though.

I can...but theres a bunch of goofy laws regarding it and the way stuffs enforced around here i dont want a gun charge. Plus usually the quads are so packed i really wouldnt have the room.

Basically it boils down to you can camp on state land off a trail or something, but you cannot have a loaded firearm unless you are hunting, or have a CPL.

So i could take it yes, but it wouldnt do me much good as id have to keep it cased or trigger locked and unloaded if we stop for the night.

Here's a decent bear pistol 🙂 .458 socom, 500gr rounds.. fuzzy wuzzy doesn't want to mess with this I tell ya..

Too bad after sights and a different grip were put on it... it was unfortunately lost in a boating accident.
