Good afternoon all, I am swapping a 4.0L into my Ranger and turns out the engine I grabbed was an automatic and does not have the same wiring setup as the manual, which is what I need. I tried going through the 2 repair manuals I have (Chilton and Haynes) and could not find much on the manual trnasmission wiring harness. Do I need to get a whole new wiring harness, or can I splce in the wires/ rewire somethings? Or (most likely) there's just something I'm missing
Trying to use the M5OD transmission

A bit confused

4.0l engine is not manual or automatic, just change the Flex Plate to a Fly Wheel

A computer can be manual or automatic
Chassis Wiring harness, after 2002, can be manual or automatic

If just swapping the engines there should be no wiring issue, unless sizes or model of engines are different

And yes you can cut and splice wires to convert an Automatic Ranger into a Manual Ranger
Automatic used a DTR sensor on drivers side of transmission
Manual used a Clutch pedal switch in the cab on clutch pedal push rod

DTR sensor will have the Reverse light's 2 wires, 12v key on and wire that goes to Reverse lights
These 2 wires would connect to the Manual trans Reverse light switch, no polarity, just an open or closed switch

"Start in Neutral's" 2 wires are on the DTR, they will need to go to Clutch switch
Also need an "in gear" ground on clutch switch to disable REV limiter and allow Cruise control to work

Wiring wise you should get a "2006 Ford Ranger Wiring Diagrams" shop manual

Like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/373021218829

Ford sends these out with Shop Manual Sets for each model each year
Includes all sub-model wiring and all options
And has exact colors and "where its found" diagrams

And they are basically "free" since you can re-sell it when you are done with it, just like the person you are buying from did, lol

Sorry for the long delay, work got to be a bit busy. But this is the wiring I have for the transmission. That's why I'm concerned with being able to hook it up

The black with blue center 16 pin connector is for a 4R or 5R Automatic Transmission
The black with yellow center 12 pin is for the DTR sensor on shifter for automatic transmission

The round grey and blue connectors look like O2 sensor plugs

Not sure on the round black and green connectors

Yeah I'm not too sure about the black and green connectors but that's the wiring I have and why I'm trying to see if I need to find a different harness or if there is a way I can splice the manual connectors in place of those

The black yellow center 12 pin connector is the only "transmission" connector you need to deal with

It has the Reverse light switch wires
And it has the "Neutral switch" wires for starting, activating starter motor

What YEAR is the wiring harness for/from?

The green 2 wire connector may be for an OSS sensor if its 2001 and up, or ISS sensor, and there should be another 2 wire connector as well if its 2001 and up wiring harness

OSS(speed) sensor, which you need, will have a dark blue/yellow stripe wire, also grey/red wire
ISS sensor, which you don't need, will have grey/orange wire along with grey/red, most sensors share that grey/red wire, just FYI

DTR connector will have a Purple/orange stripe wire from Cab fuse 2, that key on power for Reverse Lights
There will also be a black/pink stripe wire, that's OUT to Reverse light bulbs

You will need to wire those 2 wires to the 2 wire connector for reverse light switch on the manual trans, order doesn't matter, switch is either open, no lights or closed lights on

On the DTR connector will be a Pink Wire, thats from cab fuse 24, only has 12volt with key turned to START
And a Tan/red wire, that's OUT to starter relay in engine fuse box
You can just twist the ends of these wire together, to by-pass Neutral switch, or run then to the Clutch switch in the cab so starter motor will ONLY work when clutch pedal is pressed down all the way

I managed to snag the wiring off the old harness with the manual trans cables, that's why I was wondering if I could just splice that in the harness. And if so, which wires to where. I'll get a pic of that part tomorrow

No, I doubt it would be unplug and play, lol

You would have to do some unwrapping the harnesses where they are with other wires for other systems

But you can certainly trace the connectors back and see

In 2001 there was still a Main harness and then a separate manual or automatic harness was added to that
So its possible

But not sure how that was done at the factory, or even if it was done at factory, could have been shipped to Ford that way

In 2002 or 2003 and up there was a separate manual or auto main harness, not an added harness

So bad news, the harness is locked up in storage right now and I don't have a solid way to get it. And just be sure, you're saying trace the wires all the way to the PCM correct?

Well trace the transmission wires to the next connector, which might be the PCM, I don't know
But I would start at the transmission end of that harness

Alright sorry for the long delay. Work got really hectic. But here's the part of the harness I was able to snag. Hopefully this can work, and if so what wires do I need to put this into?
