Ok guys, let me get some spit balling. Bear in mind that I am a former CCNA, and IT specialist. I got out of it because I was bored and have been out for a few years. It's recent enough that I can still do my own troubleshooting and you aren't going to go over my head easily, but I'm far enough out that most of what I know is now obsolete.

Anyway, the mystery:

Cisco wireless router, worked fine before I moved. Plugged it in at the new place and for the first 24 hours the wireless connection was extremely unstable. I could get a good connection load a page or two, then it would drop me. I did a hard reset and then went in and reset to factory settings. Stabilized for about an hour then went wacky again. Got home from work today and it hasn't even hiccuped once.

Haven't had any issues if I jack in with a hard wire.

Anyone got any ideas? These things don't just resolve themselves and stay fixed.

Well, after a bit of further information gathering, it seems the router may have been damaged while moving.

It works fine as long as only one computer is trying to use a wireless connection. The second you add a second computer to the wireless, no one can go anywhere.

Now if only I had another cat 5 cable that was long enough and didn't have one clip busted off.

You mean you don't have a set of cable crimpers? I worked for an ISP doing installs and made about a hundred cables in a short period of time...they're easy...or if you've got an old cable you can always splice the wires...PITA that that is though...

Short of that...I've seen many routers go South after getting a bit of banging around...I also got one to work when I accidentally dropped it on a concrete floor...while I was calling the tech support people to come fix it...one of those "never mind, I just fixed it myself" calls...

Not sure of the exact height to drop it from for any particular models though...maybe start out at a foot and test it...max would be about the top of your TV tower, but make sure it doesn't land on the grass because that can undo the fix if it bounces...

Me too.

I just recently moved, and my router would stop working every 6 hours or so. I had it packed in a box of junk, so it had gotten tossed around quite a bit. I tried everything (I work in IT as well) and eventually just bought a new one and voila, problem solved.

The wireless transmitters in the router don't have an unlimited lifespan

I've had a couple simply die...

The first was a Cisco, the second a trendnet my current one I finally got smart and bought a more expensive netgear wireless n router, sucker cost me $90 on sale at newegg (christmas sale it was marked down from $149!)

True, but this one is only a about 2 years old. I've had ones that lasted 5 years before I broke them. It's a top-line Cisco home unit.

I'm thinking that the second transmitter is busted up though, because I went and bought a new 7" cat 5 cable (since the tab was busted off my other one) and no problems since. Grr.
