hey guys and gals. i have a 91 Explorer XLT and the wipers have been giving me fits. Everything else works but when I turn the wipers on, I can hear a click under dash. GEM??? If so could I use the one from my 91 Ranger since its down for motor work??? I don't know what all the GEM controls between the 2 hence why I am asking. Ranger is a BASE XLT manual EVERYTHING but the Explorer is a hi option XLT. I am not sure if that will effect anything.

Also the speedo on my Explorer is a bit wonky. sometimes it'll be dead on and others anywhere between 5-15 MPH high. and it varies on that speed variance. Any ideas??? I am new to this whole Ford thing so don't beat me up too bad over stupid questions like this.

Thanks for the input!!!!

Your 91 doesn't have a GEM. That wasn't a thing until about 1995, at which point it should have continued right on not being a thing, but it did become one.

There is however, a wiper speed controller under the dash. I think it is just to the right of the driver's foot well, but I'm not sure. I've never actually dealt with one on a Gen2 setup, only handled the wiring with the harness removed from the vehicle.

But yes, the parts of the wiper system should all swap between your Ranger and Explorer.

As for the speedo, I'd look at replacing the cable first. Inspect the gear on the end of it in the trans/t-case while you are under there, but the cable is probably worn and binding.

cool cool. thank you for the info. i did find the controller on the ranger and felt around in the explorer and i think i found it in the same place. i will be swapping those today, and maybe the motor and switch as well but controller first.

as for the speedo i will look into that. i though these were all electronic but i could have been wrong. i know i am not infallible. hence why i am here :)

Ranger/Explorer vehicles all had cable driven speedometers through 1994.

I had wiper problem in my 94, just clicks from behind the dash as you describe.
Replaced the switch and the motor, no dice.
It ended up being a square plastic module under the dash.
Luckily I had a spare parts truck, swapped them out and no problems sinc.

That's the speed governor that I referenced earlier.

Sorry for not replying sooner. I just had a bad switch. Yanked it out of my ranger and haven't had an issue since. I do feel guilty about robbing my ranger for parts but with the engine being toast I'll fix what I robbed when I get it running again.
