Ok, running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. Started my computer this morning to check TRS and got an error/file corrupt message. Restarted and ran check disk, it fixed everything it found, computer restarted and I only got a black screen with the cursor.

After playing with it a bit I realized I could still access task manager and launch other things. After poking around the internet I found a few other people having this issue who were able to get the desktop back temporarily. Launched Explorer.exe through the task manager, but I can't figure out how to open and edit the startup list in 7. I've found the startup folder, but I can't find the initial startup list were explorer should be loaded from normally.

Anyone know how to get there?

Right click "Computer" on the desktop or start button menu, go to "properties". Then on the menu upper right side, "advanced system settings". On that screen is an "Advanced" tab, click that, and towards the bottom is "Startup and Recovery". Click the "settings" button.

Been there already, did not see what I was looking for.

I think I may have figured it out. I haven't tested it yet though.

Ok, try this. Control panel, administrative tools. Then double click "system configuration".
That, or open the "run" dialog box, and type "configsys"....

I forgot I had to do that to edit my startup programs.

People base their diagnosis on what they personally see...

Until they get a sufficient mental database of experience....

I find that more often than not any time I hear or see the phrase "file corrupt"
I start looking for another Hard drive and a windows installation disc.

If an operating system fails and I don't KNOW that the hard drive was not the cause
I will almost never trust that hard drive again.

I've been burned way too many times

My tech friends say to just wipe the HDD and re-install it. Also says that you could have been smacked with a virus too.

you have the OS disc, right? Just boot from the CD, and run repair install, you will retain your info/docs, but will have to reinstall all updates.

Your tech friends get to do it all over again... and again.... And Again....

Because they don't deal with the underlaying problem

It only takes a few minor, not always detectable, errors on the Hard drive.

Hard drives tend to multiply all by themselves.

If myou install the same OS on the same HDD and it crashes again then
you just gotta believe thare's something wrong with the drive...

I've got a bunch of drives that are great for data drives, but simply cannot be trusted for OS installations.

I agree with AllanD about the OS reinstall...unless you've got a few hours to throw away and try it on the HDD you have (I've done this a few times and have yet to succeed in getting it to hold) then find another HDD and use the other as a data disk...

If I had the time back that I spent sitting loading Windows...I could probably have a nice vacation...

Whenever I see a system problem I presume the HDD is "fooked" until proven otherwise.

Oddly I don't wind up reinstalling very often....

a hardware problem is going to affect ANY OS installation.

And in discussions like these someone always suggests Linux, let me put the herbicide down before
someone tries to plant that seed into the discussion

From what I've seen Linux doesn't correct ANY problems it just replaces Windows problems
with Linux problems which simply are not as well know or as well documented as the windows
problems, meaning that there is a FAR smaller pool of people who can answer any questions
you might have.

It simply doesn't register with the Linux believers that if linux were going to dominate the desktop
computer world it would have already done so.

And mabey just mabey more than 2% of all desktop computers would be running it. (I think 2% is a rediculously high estimate)

And most (if not all) of the people who recommend Linux are suffering from what I describe as "Windows derangement syndrome" which is similar in characteristics to the various forms of Liberal derangement syndrome where
a person of liberal political persuasion practically foams at the mouth at the mere mention of certain Republican politicians (Sarah Palin or George Bush are most common)

Reinstalling an OS, ANY OS onto a specific hard drive more than twice (total) is the IT equivelent
of "Y'all ain't dong it right" before yet another person crashes and burns while trying to jump their
Orange 69 Dodge Charger across the creek... (not understand that the stunt men would ballast the
cars to prevent them from doing an end-over)
