I wouldn't suggest going to a carb unless you are willing to spend the money on things like shaving the head, going with a better cam, and maybe changing the rear gears (which may require front gears eventually).
I've just spent 14 years fighting with my truck and spending a small fortune on cams, heads, and other things that worked to a certain degree of satisfaction. The cam upgrade was probably the best thing I did...other than swapping in the E1ZE intake and Motorcraft 5200 carb. I could have done a bit better with a new or rebuilt carb, but funds went way too quickly...
I also learned on here that shaving the head can give you better bang under those conditions...but I didn't get to that...
Now I'm in the process of just going with a 2.5 or maybe upgrading to a 4.0...or 5.0 and put a carb on that...only problem is I would need to rework the dash and maybe even fab up my own...but I wouldn't go back to a 2.3 carbed engine for anything other than the S&M in me...
