2.8, 2.9 and 4.0L all share the same bellhousing bolt patterns.

Get one from a 4.0 cause the ratios are closer to the FM145 or the FM146.

ummmm no, wrong......the gear ratios arent closer for a 4.0 trans, if anything u want a m50dr1 that came behind a 2.9 (only a couple years) they have almost identical gearing to a fm145-6

That is not what the tech library has written. See for yourself.

or get a 4.0 m5 and use 2.3 internals for lower gearing. u can also use the 4.0 m5od with 2.8 flywheel, clutch, and use the same year slve cyl. then u can use your current starter

So you're saying that who ever wrote the gear ratios for the FM145-46 and the M5OD is wrong then.

So from reading all the replys is it possible to put the first gear from a 2.3 m5od and the rest from. 2.9 m5od?

If you take the 1st gear, you need to take EVERYTHING. Bearing to bearing. There are subtle differences in the internals. They will work in the new case, but they need to go in as a set.

its kinda like a ring&pinion set, its all matched as a set. yea u might could get by with just replacing one thing, but u are playing russian rulette. sooner or later somethings gotta go

btw if u read the chart it doesnt match up line for line with the applications. it says:

3.40 / 2.05 / 1.31 / 1.00 / 0.79 (4.0L Engines)
3.72 / 2.20 / 1.50 / 1.00 / 0.79 (All Other Engines)

how much more self explanatory can it be?:thefinger:
