ok ive been looking for a 5 speed transmission for my 91 ranger that is auto now and im having trouble finding one for the 4.0, but i think i remember reading that the 2.9 trans will work.

so my question is can i use a 2.9 transmission from a 90 b2? if so what are the differences between the 4.0 and 2.9 transmissions? and what other parts will i need off the truck for the 5 speed swap?

Well from what I've been reading you can swap the two and as far as the swapping to a 5speed its easy i did it a few years back if you have the doner truck then you should be all good and as far as what you will need the pedals, clutch master cylinder, the resivor for it the tranny and the cross member as the two might be different, and flywheel, clutch, also the starter but like i said its been awhile since I've done it also a few tips there should be a plate on the firewall you can take off for the clutch master cylinder to go through. And hopefully this is the right info you need hopefully some other peeps will chime in some. and i would just keep searching the site I,m sure the info is somewhere on here.

I didn't use the computer and the trans was in an 85 broncoII and swapped it into an 87 and it was a mud truck and didn't have a neutral safety switch and reverse lights but think that was from not hookin them up.

Your truck will run fine with the auto computer and a manual trans.

You can use a 5 speed from a 2.9 truck, but if it's an FM series, it may not last long. (Although, I had one last 10K miles behind a 4.0, until I sold the truck)

You want an M50D, it can hold up to the 4.0's torque a lot better than an FM.

Beware of the TK5, it will not hold up to the 4.0.

You will need the 4.0 manual flywheel, clutch and starter as well of course

i actually found out it was an FM, but i just stumbled across an M5 pretty cheap so i might get it. but its just the tranny clutch and flywheel he doesnt have the truck, so will the pedals and master cylinder work from a 95 2wd 2.3 ranger work on it? and pretty much any clutch line from a ranger out of the junkyard?
