Picked up a 98 Explorer 5.0L AWD. Has a dead hole in the motor (think cy1 piston is damaged). Its in pretty good shape other wise. Snagged it for $350. Found a used motor for $500.

:icon_hornsup:

She currently drives a 93 Explorer Limited with over 250K on the mileage. Got tired of fixing it and its starting to leak oil pretty bad (intake and valve covers, already did them once 50K ago). time for her to have something a little nicer/newer. She just has to keep the Limited on the road through winter and in the spring she can drive the 98. That way if she wrecks or gets wrecked this winter it'll be in the 93.

wow, good deal! where did you find that one? I have been looking for a 5.0 explorer for cheap like that for a while now. You could sell the heads and intake on that to a mustang guy and just about get all your money back for the new engine.

A Local guy I know who runs a shop, customer brought it in and didn't want to fix it so he bought it off him, then I bought it from him.

I thought my 94 Sploder for $350 was a good deal with a dead A4LD... Nice deal!

All done and been driving it around since Weds. Good thing the wife is gonna be driving it, I'd get myself into all kinds of trouble lol. All said and done I think I have about $1100 into it. I have gone through it and fixed all the trinky shit and what not, shes ready to rock and roll.

Here's the old motor with the head pulled showing cyl #1

There was a pretty decent explorer under all that grime and bad motor thing

Nice looking truck! We had a 98 Mountaineer with a 5.0 and I absolutely loved it. I only traded it in because of the MPG thing. We do like the Escape we have, but really miss the room of the Explorer/Mountaineers.

ACtaully this one is getting 14 mpg with me beating the crap out of it lol....hit 110 the other day and was crusing 80-90 on the highway. A guy I know with a 98 and a 5.0L is getting 20mpg on the highway taking it easy.

And I just sold the wifes 93 for as much as I have into the 98 lol.

I'd be forced to extract that AWD TC for a selectable RWD / 4WD TC and let the tire roasting begin.

Word is, my 99 White Ex EB 4.0 SOHC is coming back here from WV. I'll be doing the brown wire mod shortly after its return. I fixed it and gave it to my daughter last year. I haven't driven it much. Looks like yours with gold trim and some rust. I plan to pound it till the tranny goes out, put a stick in it. If I ever get it back, that is.

Needless to say, I like yours!
