Why won't an oil filter designed for my 4.0 OHV fit?

So a little while back I bought my 1993 ranger 4.0 V6. As per the usual with all new purchases, I went to change the fluids. When changing the oil and filter, I noticed that the filter looked to be smaller than other 4.0 filters I've seen before. So I figured, what the heck? I went out and bought a filter for the 4.0, and it wouldn't fit! It was just physically too big. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks

There were two different size but for the 4.0l OHV and the 4.0l SOHC

FL1A seal at 2.4" <<< smaller and for the 4.0l OHV, which is what you have, 1990-2000 Rangers
FL820S seal at 2.9"
