They did take some assistance they had to pay back. I forget the details. Low/no interest loan or something like that. There was also a employee issue with the unions that were raising some concerns.
They took out a loan against everything down to the blue oval before everybody else went to the govt for $$.

Not saying that is a great way to run a company but they tried to fix it on their own rather than let the ship keep sinking like the other two.
I thought they Sold their shares in Volvo, Mazda, Aston Martin, and LR/Jaguar to keep from taking the Bail out.

That may have been part of it.

I forgot about that, they did that too.

Really Ford shouldn't have bought them in the first place...

Buying all those odd ball brands was Jack Nasser's brain storm. He was an idiot. The modular engines came out in 1991 in Lincolns and Ford and Merc got them in 92. They were flawless, we had zero problems. Then Nasser started squeezing the suppliers and we had 5.4's leaking oil from the head gaskets in big numbers in 99 because he insisted the gaskets be cheaper. Then Firestone ATX tires from the Akin plant started failing on Explorers, Firestone wouldn't stand up because they belong to Bridgestone. Nasser decided Ford should pay to replace all the ATX tires, regardless where they were made, and eat the expense. Customers loved it until they figured out that the Goodyear RSA's they got lasted half as long as the ATX's did and were helpless in snow. He was a bonehead.

I had a '99 Saab 9-5 wagon with the traditional 4 cylinder ecopower engine. Very sleek and sharp looking with leather and wood trim interior. Maybe the best car I've ever had. Drove it 230,000 miles. Total repairs over that period were brakes, a fuel pump, an ignition module ($200), rear shocks, a clutch, and a turbo at 175,000 miles. I sold it to my mechanic. He is still driving it and loves the gas mileage and passing power.

Your 99 Saab may be the exception that proves the rule. I had one customer who bought 3 new Vegas and had good luck, too. He should have bought lottery tickets.
