With the truck sitting in the field for 14 years, should I replace the master cylinder and booster on general principles? Or is it one of those that can sit for a long time and be OK? I will say that the system is completely dry and there's no fluid in it..

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
If it were me, first I'd put fluid in the master and then see what I've got.

In general, if the brake system is completely dry, then "yes", replacing ALL of the parts used to be the norm.

BUT, since replacement parts are such garbage these days, I wouldn't get rid of an original part until it's been proven to be failed beyond repair.

That's just me; "your mileage may vary", etc. . . .

If there was no leak in the system there would still be fluid in it...

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
If the brake fluid is still light colored the master might be OK, if the fluid is dark colored I'd replace it, along with all the hoses, wheel cylinders and calipers. Hoses that old should be replaced regardless if it was driven everyday or not and the hydraulic pieces are cheap insurance.
