Last weekend I replaced the valve cover and intake manifold gaskets on my 1999 4.0. My Haynes repair manual (as well as stuff I've found here on this forum), all showed the EGR valve as being on the driver's side of the upper intake manifold, just below the IAC valve. There was even detailed instructions on how to disconnect the EGR vacuum lines, etc. before pulling the manifold. Here's my question.......did some 4.0's not have an EGR? Is that even possible? The reason I ask is because there is no EGR on my engine! I was looking right at the picture in the repair manual, which clearly shows the EGR, and comparing it to my engine. There's nothing there. Am I going crazy, or did Ford relocate the EGR or do away with it at some point in 1999?

I don't know about '99s but my '91 4.0 doesn't have one.

EGR is only required if the engine model/year/calibration produces excessive NOx without it. Not every engine has it.

My PCV valve is in the valve cover on that side - EGR - not sure it has one?

The funny thing is, I went ahead and bought an EGR valve gasket thinking I was going to be pulling the EGR off and wanted to put a new gasket on. If the '99's have no EGR, why do they sell a gasket for it?

Because some 99's probably used it (i.e. California models or certain engine/trans combos).
