Wheel Bearing Repair kits?

So I had a shop replace my rear wheel bearing with one of the aftermarket "repair" kits. But the way he installed it was wheel seal first, then the bearing. Which to me doesn't make sense having the bearing on the outside, sealed from the diff fluid. That will cause it eventually to run dry. Unless that how the repair kits work and your suppose to grease them?

While I've never used a "repair kit", I have replaced that bearing. For that matter, I'm not sure what a kit would repair? That being said, the main axle seal should most definitely be on the outside facing the flange, with the bearing behind it closer to the differential, not-visible because of the seal.\

They installed it wrong and they should cover all costs to remove and replace the parts with new ones. I'm not even sure how one could install it backwards.. That would really take some amateur hour bulls**t to even make happen. DO NOT LET THEM PULL THAT ASSEMBLY OUT AND REUSE IT!! DEMAND A NEW ONE. REMOVING IT WILL LIKELY DAMAGE IT.


I've seen rear axle repair kits that the lip of the seal rides on a different portion of the axle shaft than the factory seal did. This is used for axle shafts that have a groove cut in to them from the original axle seal, and are leaking oil.. I've also seen them include a very thin sleeve that gets installed on the axle shaft, to cover the groove that was cut in to the axle shaft.

While this diagram isn't specifically for the Ford 7.5" or 8.8" axle, it shows what I'm talking about well enough..

This image shows a typical "repair bearing" - which moves the contact path of the bearing's rollers and the seals contact patch on the axle shaft.

Take note of 2:45 in this video from SKF, which is a bearing manufacturer...

I have seen harder and dumber things done.

I once heard one guy cussing up a storm, throwing tools, and hollering from the back of the shop over a brand new stripped exhaust bolt his apprentice had just installed, allegedly by hand. The threads were burned off of it, like you get when you just run it in with an impact gun and don't start a thread first.

I don't mean he put the backers facing the rotor. He installed them with the side facing the box towards the hat of the rotor. We do not know how.
