I would bet good money that you could hang your entire truck by that hitch.
You probably could, but then a couple years ago Ford was saying you could hang their F-150 by a single bed bolt too.

Only problem is, when you are hauling something it will put more force on the hitch than it weighs.

Basically they are only for small, small trailers and bike racks. The larger square tube is much stronger than the small square shaft. They also make a solid large shaft too.

most 1 1/2" receivers are class one hitches rated too a max of 2000lbs. that is NOT safe to tow a large anything with a class one hitch. last thing i would want to see is some yahoo going down the interstate towing an 8000lbs trailer with a class one hitch and the hitch letting go because it will. that is not what that is rated for.
class one isnt even that much... I have a class III (1.5") thats rated for 3k

Those receivers are actually 1-1/4", not 1-1/2".

I've installed many little hitches. They often bolt through the pan of the car where the spare tire goes and and fastened through sheet metal. WHne those say 2,000#, you better listen.

On my wife's Pilot, the frame hitch bolts through the rear subframe, which is big and full length, and I believe it would hold anything. 4,500# for streamlined wieghts and 3,500# for non-streamlined weights is the rating. I've never towed anything with it, but we have a big box that fits on the receiver for luggage on long trips.

I have a Draw-Tite Ultraframe on my crewcab. I see 3,000# tongue weights when I put my Bobcat on it backwards. My big truck has a 9" deep x 1/4" thick frame. A Ranger is 6" by 3/16", which is respectable. My big truck has 9 leafs and a 7,500# capacity rear axle. A Ranger has a 2,750# axle, semi-float, which means the axle shafts are load bearing. A real truck does not have load-bearing axle shafts.

The thing about a towed load is the heaviness of the ring gear in the truck. All of the load has to be absorbed by the ring gear. You lift off of the gas, the whole load hits the ring gear. The axle supports the load, the ring gear has to absorb the shock of accel/decel and also propel the load.

I hate my big pickup, but it's got the capabilities I need. I'm building a Ranger to do those things, though. I want to get rid of my big pickup.

This may not count because it wasnt me personaly but my dad let someone that was working for him use his 2001 4.0 4x4 with 4.10s as a work truck, it hauled around what probably was about 5000 lbs of heat and air equipment, (that is 5000 including the trailer.) and it did that for about 7000 miles then we used it to haul four wheelers around for another 5000 or so miles. that did lead to the trany being pulled at 82000 miles though. and trust me as if that cargo trailer wasnt enough this guy drove the piss out of it also.

Was it a stick or an automatic?

Fortune City doesn't like to let you host your pictures there and link to them here, it seems. I had to take a screen shot to get the picture at all, and then saved it into your attachments.
If you use Firefox, you can screenshot it and direct link it without having to save. I do it all the time.

Ok when I was 16 I went with my gfather to pull a friend out down by the river. He had his 1500 stuck at the bottom of the boat ramp trying to pull his boat out. We enlisted the help of some guys down there. One had a 1500 Z71 and he got stuck trying to get the first truck, the second guy had a GMC 4x4 and he got stuck in front of the Z71. At this point we hooked My Gfathers 2 wheel drive ranger up and drug the three trucks and the boat out. Went home, sold my car and bought a ranger.

My credo
If you're not making mistakes, you're not learning.
Strangely I haven't posted in this thread yet, I might as well throw my submissions in.

ALL WITH A 4 CYLINDER!

We put the front back on, filled the Ranger bed flat, and put more spare parts in the bed of the J-Truck. My friend was in the passenger seat.

Horse Shit. Yes, I mean fresh, wet and hot stinking horse shit! Can't remember how many loads. Did it for 2 days. My 94 STX, S/C, 4.0L, AutoT, 4WD was toped off in the bed with a BobCat. Only went a short distance and very slow. Hauled a 1998 Ranger Reg Cab on a 20 foot trailor 50 miles down an interstate ( InnerState I mean-Alaska) doing 50 with my 2004 S/C Edge, 4.0L, AutoT, 4WD. No Engine, Trans or T-Case in it though. Had E-Brake set up and frame mounted hitch. Kept it out of OD. Very interesting trip. Never again. Sold the Edge.

Here you go:
17x7x7 Haulmark standing almost 9'

Front axle: 1740
Rear axle: 4420
Trailer: 6740
Gross: 12900
4.0L / 5 speed

Oh yeah, 250 miles north from St Louis. 60 mph, 4th gear (I only tow in 4th). Resulted in 14 mpg.

So far probably my Snap-On tool box full of tools. Sorry no pictures. I know that box with tools weighed over 1000 lbs though.

only ever towed anything large once I converted to 4x4 with 4.10's and 31" tires, but here's the list:

-about 1000lb of scrap metal 25 miles twice
-roughly 2000lb if not 2500lb or so of hay bales about 15 miles
-probably 4-5000lb of gravel about 5 miles, rear axle was about on the bump stops from the load in the bed, trailer was squatting pretty good too. that was a slow trip with a 2.3...

With a bone stock 2004 4.0L XLT FX4 (5-speed)

I towed three quads...the 900lb polaris in the bed....and a 450lb Honda and a 400lb Suzuki on a 900 lb trailer. Along with about 700lbs of gear/gas. I drove about 3.5 hr each way through north utah to southern idaho for a huge 4-wheeling dunes trip i did back in sept. The worst part about this was going through the mountains.......only hit 3rd once and that was on the way back up this MASSIVE hill. haha

The most difficult thing I have towed though is this 6x12 homemade enclosed trailer i bought not to long ago. With The Honda in my truck and the Polaris in the trailer(actually follws better with weight in it) with about 700 lbs of gear/gas i towed this about an hr and a half. Its not that it doesnt follow well exactly....once you get up to highway speeds this trailer sways like a SOB. but like i said follows good with the polaris up front. (homemade----that put the axle too far forward and their isnt enough weight on the tounge) And because this thing is a BOX about 1.5 feet off the ground.....Gas milelage is non-existant. I have since lowered the trailer....and moved the axle back about 8 inches....tows like a champ not....milelage still sucks but we use the flatbed for 4-wheeling trips now.

I'll post a pic tonight when I get off work.
