With my 92 3.0L 5spd 2wd I tow-dollyed my 1969 Mustang from Mountain View, CA to Alto, MI. Jan 1994. Hit black ice in Iowa, spun around thru the median.
With my 94 4.0L auto 2wd I flat trailered a 1967 Olds 442 about 250 miles from Indiana to Clarksville, MI. No issues. I think the Ranger had over 150k then.

I've got pics somewhere...

I towed my Grandfathers 1970 24' Glastron V-234 with a tandem axle trailer about 10 miles to the launch launched it. Went fishing for the day.Pulled it out and drove home with my 2003 Fx4 no problem 4lo and we were set. It was funny cause all the guys with the full size trucks kept asking us if we knew what we were doing but when we pulled it out no problem they just looked shocked. Weights 3025 pounds dry.
I can do you one better. According to the old man, the best possible vehicle for towing a trailer up a slippery boat ramp was - anyone want to guess? - an Olds Toronado with the FWD. that had to keep people at the ramp guessing.

Also an old friend of his used to tow a Soling ( http://www.sailingtexas.com/Pics/picsolingba.jpg ) about 2280 lbs w/o trailer - behind a 1969 Z28 camaro. only had problems going over the bridge in lake charles LA when it was icy. then he just backed up a mile and hit it wide open to clear the top.

And I can't find the pic of my truck towing the 3 boat trailer... anyone seen it?

I pulled my 91 Mustang LX on a 16' trailer with my 2000 Explorer. First time towing ever. No trailer brakes, it was equipped but my truck wasn't.

I towed a 22' Cabin Cruiser about 30 miles with my 91 4.0L for about 30 miles with already soft clutch, by the time I made it home it was fried. It must have been some sight going down the road. I did have to take it on the freeway for about 1 or 2 miles. I towed many boats with that truck 18 and 19 footers no problem. Pulling them out of the water was the hardest on the clutch. I have a pic but not online, really nice free boat that I sold for $1500.

Rescued a Toyota that was loaded up with scrap metal to the point it was bottoming out all four corners on bumps. The Toyota couldn't handle the weight, overheated and died. It was the middle of the night so no picture unfortunately. Toyota's are over-rated IMO.

I put ping-pong ball in the bed and hauled that around once.

I also carried the sole of Slap-happy Joe around for a few months once.

soooo.. i am planning of towing my 84 s10 ext cab "race truck" to a drag race even this summer.. id guess the s10 would weigh in at about 3000lbs? and the trailer about 1700

ofcourse the trailer will have breaks(by law up here in canadur) and my ranger has a class 3 hitch..it is a about a 4 hr drive to the race but if i take it easy it and dont be in a big rush it shouldnt be a problem right?

my ranger is a 06 fx4 4.0L with 4.10's with 33's.. but for the tow i may bolt on the stock 31's..

whats your guys' thaughts?

heres a pic of the s10

Just take it slow, and get a transmission temp guage, thats the only weak link there. Plus the brakes. But with trailer brakes you should be Okay.

I tow this regularly. Yes it has trailer brakes.

Truck was designed with a 7.5 inch 3.45 ratio rear end, but I trashed it when I high-centered it on a gravel road with deep wheel ruts. Junkyard gave me an 8.8" mystery axle, I believe the ratio is probably about 3. GPS shows 64 mph when speedo shows 55. Way too high, idles at 15 mph in 1st gear.

But I towed this camper on a 530 mile trip while hauling the quad. Took it easy, didn't have any problems.

Heavy Enough

I've towed, more than once, 3000 pounds of sand or gravel in my single axle dump trailer (1800 pounds empty). The trailer has brakes and I've got the brake controller turned up high enough to help slow the truck instead of the other way around. I put in a 160 degree thermostat, and I already have the rear axle from a 96 explorer with the 8.8 and disk brakes to throw on if the one on the truck gives up before I'd like it to.

Honestly, the truck doesn't seem to mind level ground but with that much weight it's not happy about climbing.
