Got it back from the shop and it appears the fire started at back of fuel rail. should I rebuild the 2.9 or go ahead and find a 4.0 and swap engines ?

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
If my truck did that, I would probably cry a bit. Glad you have something left that is worthy of repairing.

Check for crispiness of rig.

That kind of thing can warp and change the temper of steel.

A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
Keep the 2.9. Hell replace the crispy pieces, wireing, etc, that engine would pry run.

This is also why all my older stuff has an fire extinguisher

I would do a 2.8L with carb and duraspark swap, if a manual I would put in the 4.0L clutch and starter.

Other then that, a 5.0L swap. I would not do a 2.9L engine rebuild.
