I’m wanting to do a 5.0 v8 swap in my ranger. I’ve found a good donor explorer but I want to to use a manual transmission and this explorer is automatic. What transmissions (2wd) will be a direct bolt up to the 302? Or will work with the 302 with only small modifications?

Alright thanks guys. I think the 450d-r2 will be a good choice. I looked it up and see where it was used in f-150s and broncos and etc. new question though.

I have a 1999 2wd ranger. 3.0 v6. What kind of adapters are required to mount the 302?

Just to clarify which m5od-r2 to look for...
An f150 with the 4.2l v6. It has the best shifter location for our trucks. I think the only mod is to drill the mounting holes from 12mm to 1/2".

I read this. In fact I have read all the how to articles on this. None of them are clear enough on what to do as far as mounting goes because most of them are being done to a 4x4 model. Mine is 2wd and has a different frame

A 2wd m5odr2 f150 has the same transmission mount as a m5odr1 ranger.
The Engine needs to be as far back as possible and if you need to move you're transmission cross member back or forth the only way you can figure it out is bolt the engine and transmission together put them in and see where the mount sits and move it there.

Also make sure the crossmember goes back in the same way you took it out.

I used Ranger clutch hydraulics, slave, master and line on mine.

Do you have a VSS in your trans?

Yes, 1999 Ranger, well 1998-2000, uses the Rear axle ABS sensor for speedometer

Yes, the M5OD-R2 from a 1997-2003 4.2l V6 2WD F-150 will bolt to the 302/5.0l
Yes, the 4.2l used metric size bolts and the 5.0l used SAE so holes in bell housing need to be enlarged a bit

I plan to use everything I can from my donor explorer. Will the computer need any changes since it’s coming from an automatic set up to a manual transmission?
