There are so many for sale out there it is mind boggling. What does the Forum recommend. For occasional use only.

Depends what you wanna spend. The best "cheap" scanner I've found is the Ancel AD310. It's about 30 bucks and has all the basic functions. Reads basic codes (wont do ABS, SRS etc), has freeze frame, some live data, and I/M readiness for making sure you will pass state emissions testing.

If you want more features prices steadily keep going up to about 5-6 grand...

If you are looking for a decent basic scanner, I use Scan Gauge II and an Actron 800 series scanner. If you want to be able to scan ABS codes and more you’ll need something better.
