Hi-

I have a 2003 Ford Ranger. The other day, my check engine light came on, flashing. I'd had no noticeable problems beforehand. When I opened up the hood, the first thing I noticed was a broken wire. I've had the hardest time finding out what this part is, as it looks to be a relatively simple fix. The wire that is broken is connected to another wire, and is also connected to a bulbous thing lower in the engine chamber. I've posted images of these parts, hopefully the pics are good enough to indicate what the parts are. Now, the question is, is this an easy fix, and would this wire being broken cause the flashing CE light?

Thanks in advance,
Ed in Arlington

Pictures are not good enough to tell what is broken. Point to the part that is broken. And then take a picture farther away pointing to the piece that is broken so we can tell where it is in the engine compartment.

Your pictures suck as does your discription. I can't tell what you are trying to describe, which is kink if understandable if you don't know what it is. You could at least draw some arrows or circle things in the pictures.

I'm going out on a limb and guessing that you are asking about the lives your holding in one of the pictures, and the big round thing in the other picture. That is a vacuum hose that you are holding, not a wire. The round thing is a vacuum canister.

A vacuum leak could potentially cause a CEL, but we can't tell from here if that is what is causing your CEL. If it's still running stop by your nearest parts store and ask them to scan codes.

Also this section is for showing off your truck and what you are doing to it. Technical questions should be asked in other sections. This one for example should probably go in general discussions section since you are trying to identify a part you are very unfamiliar with. There are also sections dedicated to engines, axles, and suspension stuff. Asking in the correct section will help you get quicker and better answers/help.

vacuum line & vacuum canister. it' stores vacuum.
there should be a vac diagram near the top of the radiator.
it's more of a flow chart than an actual "this goes here" diagram, but it will help.
the torn up thing in your hand is a splice, it can be replaced with a small piece of hose.

My wife would also call that a "wire"! And then get mad at me for correcting her.

Your vacuum line broke, probably got hot and brittle...go to auto parts store look for pack of rubber tubing pieces, find right diameter, cut a piece to one inch long, stick broken ends of vacuum line snugly into each end of rubber tube, you're done.......make sure the vac line snugly goes into the rubber piece
